Free claim terms
Version
The styles marked free on the font pages are free for Desktop and Web at tier 1, claimed in the store or downloaded from the official release, under the same agreement as a paid license. This is version 2026-09 of the text. A license is governed by the version recorded on its receipt or license certificate, which does not change when a later version is published.
Which styles
Each font page marks the styles it offers free. Every other style is paid at every tier.
Which licenses
A free claim grants the Desktop license and the Web license at tier 1 for the claimed styles: 5 users and 5,000 monthly visitors or 20,000 monthly page views. Higher tiers of Desktop and Web are bought like any other license. A claim grants no rights under the App, Advertising, Broadcasting or OEM schedules; those are bought separately for the same styles.
Claiming
A free license can be claimed from an account on hippopotype.com. The claim names a license holder like a purchase does, is recorded on a license certificate in the account, and the files are downloaded from the account. There is no payment card, no eligibility test and no declaration.
Official download
The styles marked free can also be downloaded from hippopotype's official GitHub release, linked from each font page. A copy from that release carries the same free license as a claim, without claiming: whoever uses it is the license holder, under the same rules on who may hold a license, and the release stands in for the order, including the version of these terms it names.
Same agreement
A free license, claimed or downloaded, is a full license under the font license agreement and the Desktop and Web schedules. It is perpetual and it is not a trial. Every permission and restriction applies exactly as it does to a paid license, including the rules on agencies, redistribution and modification.
When more is needed
When a claimed style is needed above tier 1, the license moves to the tier that covers it the same way as any other license, and the claim stays valid for its own scope. A use that the Desktop and Web schedules do not cover needs the matching license, bought in the store or arranged by contact.
